Chulgang 출강

The song 'Chulgang' is played using the 25-string gayageum, typically in a group. However, it was originally created by Kim Yong-sil 김용실 in North Korea for the geomungo 거문고. Songs originating in North Korea typically do not convey emotion or inspiration but instead, convey realism and emphasize life in the fields. This song, in particular, conveys the life of iron-makers at a steel mill.

The song contains different groups that converge together, including the high and low parts (similar to harmony and bass). It is also full of dynamics, ranging from loud and soft, and fast and slow. Similar to any other gayageum song, it follows a dynamic flow from slow, fast, slow, fast, and slow. Repeating this dynamic keeps the tension high while listening but also while playing.

Here is an example of the song, played in North Korea: https://youtu.be/3h7RBuaGkSU
